Hens Parties

Hens Parties are quite new to the Western World, having only come about during the sexual revolution of the 1960’s. While in the Middle East and North Africa, women have long celebrated their upcoming nuptials with their female friends and family. The term Hen Party actually comes from the tradition women in the Middle East applying henna to their hands in celebration prior to their big day. Henna is a very ancient art of non-permanent tattooing. So the name doesn’t actually come from the (very non-flattering) comparison of female women to the female chicken wanting to nest etc, as many people tend to believe.

Prior to the 1960’s in the Western World however, it was considered a taboo if a future bride tried to entertain her friends before her marriage. Society frowned upon it because the entertaining of one’s friends was considered a sign of wealth. Imagine if a woman entertained her gal pals, showing a sign of wealth and thus showing no need for the security of a male. Oh the scandal!

As women became empowered, and removed the shackles of their male counterparts and relatives, they started enjoying their life, the way they wanted. Subsequently, they also started to stage hen parties before getting married. Starting in Britain, the earliest hen parties were simple dinners, with no more then a few close friends and a couple of relatives. Alternately the future bride and her friends would just go out for a shopping spree or a simple a cup of coffee.

Hens parties are Different To Bachelor parties

As men’s bachelor parties progressed into attending strip clubs and heavy drinking, women soon adopted a similar approach. Women no longer wanted a simple dinner with their friends or a shopping spree. Hen parties started to evolve into a more fun and celebratory event.

In America a more traditional alternative was created in the bridesmaid’s luncheon, which would be hosted by the bride and/or her mother during the day, usually several days or a week before the wedding. This tradition involved the Bride to be presenting her bridesmaids with a small gift.
However if a significant aspect of the party is presenting small gifts to the bride-to-be instead of the braidesmaids, then the event is properly called a bridal shower. For the convenience of the bride-to-be, bridal showers are usually held earlier than a bachelorette party.

The maid of honour or the bridesmaids often plan a hen party for the bride-to-be. The location often depends on the amount of enthusiasm expected from the gals in attendance. The celebrations can be held in a public place, such as a restaurant or bar, or may be held in a private home. Some celebrations can get quite wild, with inappropriate behaviour and too much alcohol. Alternately, a day of drinking champagne at a day spa would be considered a much nicer way to spend a day with the girls prior to marriage for many brides.

Unlike a bridal shower with young girls in attendance, the hen party is strictly for adult women. Bringing a gag gift is a must, with light-hearted male-bashing a favourite theme. Hen party games and gifts are meant to cause a bit of blushing and much laughter. The Love Shop Offers a wide range of gag gifts, hen dress-ups and hen night’s games.

Step by Step Guide on How to Throw a Bridal shower surprise

Sometimes it seems as though surprise parties are impossible these days with Blackberries, email and text messaging all posing as a spoiler. There are ways though that it can be done. If you wish to throw a surprise Bridal shower there are a few things to keep in mind and which will help to make it the best Bridal shower surprise ever.

Hens parties The First Step

The first thing you are going to need to do is make up the guest list. You really cannot go any further before you do this because you are going to need to find out who is willing to come, what days are good for everyone, how far they are going to be able to travel and so on.

Write up the guest list not forgetting to include the bride-to-be’s best friends and family members, the number of people that you invite is really up to you and how big a party you think the bride would feel comfortable with.

  1. Picking the Perfect Date The phase in planning the surprise shower is to actually set the date. This can be somewhat tricky, because more than anything you are going to have to make sure that the bride herself is able to make it on that date, but without letting her know what you are up to.Speaking to her
fiancé to see what his opinion on this is, and getting a hold of her date book/day planner, without being overly nosy, can help you check to see what dates she is free and available.
  2. Keep Her Busy While you are busy planning and preparing for the party you are going to need to make sure that the soon to be bride is kept out of the way and busy.Without making it too obvious that you are trying to get her out of the way, you should have her occupied with other tasks while you and the other girls are busy working away to make sure that her bridal shower is just right.

Keeping Everyone Quite

Bridal showers can be very exciting, especially a Surprise Bridal shower, but making sure that everyone keeps quite is the trickiest part of pulling it off.
The more people each person tells about the surprise party the greater the risk of a leak becomes and the chances that the guest of honour finding out about the surprise increase, so making sure that all of the guests are tight lipped and keep it on a need to know basis.

Here’s Some Hens Parties Game Ideas

  1. Eat melted chocolate off a banana on a stick with your hands behind your back ( you get the picture)

How bout truth or dare, or do up a questionnaire and ask the groom (before the night) about the bride and then she has to answer the questions and see if she can match his.
Get: a bar of chocolate, a plate, knife and fork. Kids headband (Princess dress up) and attach some netting (Veil). Rings, Necklaces, Bracelets (Kids or $2.00 shop the gaudier the better), Dice. Everyone throws the dice, when you get a 6 you race to the dress-up and put it on, once it is all on then you can start eating the chocolate with the knife and fork.
You eat until someone else throws a 6 then get the dress up off as quick as possible and the next lucky thrower puts it all on. and away again….This can be really quick and often several people never get to the chocolate eating stage. (If this happens to much reduce the items in the dress up)

Lynette – you could play an adults version of the chocolate game – instead of chocolate, you have to skull as many alcohol shots before someone else throws a 6. ahahaaa – that would make for an interesting night!

  2. Another good game is “I never”. Someone starts off my saying something like “I’ve never had sex in a bus stop”, and everyone who has – has to drink, and then it’s on to the next person. Doesn’t have to be revolved around sex of course, but it usually ends up that way!

Buy one of those 24 packs of toilet paper from the $2 shop or warehouse, get into groups of two or three and see who makes the best wedding dress with only toilet paper and cello-tape. Then model them to see which is the best one – the bride will wear the winning gown for the rest of the night. If you only have a small group of girls you can just dress the bride in toilet paper altogether.
